The San Francisco 49ers announced that they will be starting rookie quarterback Trey Lance in place of injured Jimmy Garoppolo. With a 5-0 record and a 1,000 yard passer this season, the 49ers are hoping to keep their winning streak going.
The start trey lance fantasy is a story about the San Francisco 49ers rookie quarterback Trey Lance. He will make his first career start in place of injured Jimmy Garoppolo.
SANTA CLARA (California) – Trey Lance, a rookie quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, was put into the game at halftime last week on short notice. There is no such ambiguity this week.
Lance will make his first NFL start against the 4-0 Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, according to Niners coach Kyle Shanahan. Lance has been getting repetitions with the starting offense this week as starter Jimmy Garoppolo has been dealing with a strained and bruised right calf.
After not practicing all week, Garoppolo is classified as out on Friday’s injury report. The 49ers may also be without tight end George Kittle, who has a calf ailment and is classified as questionable.
That means Lance, the No. 3 overall selection in this year’s NFL draft, may start without the Niners’ top tight end, and veteran Nate Sudfeld, who was promoted from the practice squad, might be Lance’s backup.
“I’m thrilled,” Lance remarked, “but I’m not going to make it larger than it is.” “I was hoping Jimmy would be healthy, but he’s done an outstanding job, and he and Nate, as well as (quarterbacks coach) Rich (Scangarello) and Coach Shanahan, have been very helpful this week. As a result, I’m looking forward to the chance.”
Lance will be 21 years and 154 days old when he makes his first NFL start on Sunday, making him the fourth-youngest quarterback in the league. He’ll also try to become just the second quarterback chosen in the first round (after Phil Simms in 1979) to win his first start against a 4-0 or better club.
Lance is coming off his first prolonged playing time, thus this will be his first start. He took over for Garoppolo at halfway of last week’s defeat to the Seattle Seahawks after discovering he’d be starting only minutes before the third quarter started. He calmed down after some rough early minutes in a performance Shanahan described as having “some good and some terrible.”
Lance completed 9 of 18 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns, as well as running seven times for 41 yards. Having a full week of practice with the starters not only enabled Lance to gain confidence, but it also allowed the 49ers to develop a game plan that included more Lance-specific plays.
Even yet, no one can anticipate how Lance will do in his debut race.
“I’m really looking forward to seeing him play,” Shanahan added. “I know he’s capable of a lot, but this will be his first time out on the field for the whole game. I’m simply excited to watch him perform, but I’m not expecting much. From our perspective, you attempt to prepare a man as well as you can. I know he’s done his bit in terms of preparation, and when Sunday rolls around, that’s typically when you get to let free and deal with the consequences.”
Garoppolo expressed optimism that he will be ready to play against the Cardinals on Wednesday, but admitted that he would be “battling through” his calf issue rather than being completely fit.
Given Garoppolo’s effort to return too soon from a high ankle injury in last year’s Week 5 defeat to the Miami Dolphins, this was a significant difference. In that 43-17 defeat, a visibly hampered Garoppolo finished 7-of-17 for 77 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions before being benched.
The Niners and Garoppolo had hoped he would be able to participate in some form in Friday’s practice as late as Friday morning. However, following some pre-practice testing, it became apparent that Garoppolo would not be able to play.
Shanahan said, “Somebody needs to protect them from themselves.” “(He) attempted to warm up and get ready to go. We needed to make a better choice since it wasn’t responding correctly.”
With the Niners set to have a bye in Week 6, Garoppolo will have more time to heal from his injury. The hope is that he will be able to play against the Indianapolis Colts on October 24.
Garoppolo said on Wednesday that although he hoped to play this week, he was spending as much time as he could helping Lance prepare.
“It’s a balancing act,” Garoppolo said. “If Trey has any questions, anything that I’ve run before or something he hasn’t run, (I’m) happy to assist him in any way.”
