Basketball Preview: Alabama A&M vs. UAB in 2021
UAB suffered its first setback of the season on Thursday night, losing 66-63 to South Carolina. In the defeat, Jordan Walker led the Blazers with 15 points, while Quan Jackson and Michael Ertel each contributed 12 points.
After the game, Jackson remarked, “I want to have an impact on both sides of the court.” “However, defense is where I excel since I can make use of my speed and length.” Against my opponent, I want to be a gnat. I aim to annoy and torment my opponent whenever I have the opportunity.”
After the defeat, University of Alabama-Birmingham coach Andy Kennedy commented, “Offensively, we were very unexpectedly weak in a lot of areas, but here we are.” “We had two or three chances to take the lead, a couple of good looks from behind the three.” Our failure to stop them and force them to play from behind — we had Jordan Walker on a drive and got nothing, and we had a couple of lane giveaways. We’re not a team that turns the ball over 15 times often, and I got 10 out of two of my most experienced players.”
Alabama A&M, on the other hand, has dropped two straight games, most notably against the Cincinnati Bearcats, 89-66, this week. Jalen Johnson, a junior forward, led all scorers with 30 points, although he didn’t have much support. Garrett Hicks, a junior guard, was the only other Bulldog to score in double digits, averaging 11 points per game. In an inconsistent performance, A&M shot 37.1 percent from the field and 30 percent from downtown.
Things aren’t going to get much easier for the Bulldogs in this game. They’re averaging just 65.0 points per game, which won’t be enough against a motivated Alabama-Birmingham team.
The Blazers don’t want to start a losing streak now that they’ve already lost their first game of the season, so Kennedy wants his squad focused on becoming better.
“Even though this is our first defeat of the year, and no one enjoys that,” Kennedy said, “this is the sort of game we needed early on to get a reality check, look in the mirror, and man up and say these are the things we have to do to be a successful team.”
