Salah is the first Liverpool player to score in nine straight appearances across all competitions.

Liverpool made it three victories in a row in the Champions League group stage, defeating Spanish champions Atletico Madrid in a game full of drama. Mohamed Salah maintained his outstanding goal-scoring record.

The Reds had an early two-goal advantage wiped out by Antoine Griezmann’s double in a frenetic, thrilling encounter in the Spanish capital between teams who were brilliant in attack but vulnerable at the defense.

Salah’s well-taken penalty, given for a reckless push on Diogo Jota by Mario Hermoso, allowed the visitors to regain their dominance and steal a huge victory via Salah’s well-taken penalty early in the second half.

Jota came close to being the villain when his tackle on Jose Maria Gimenez resulted in a penalty, but the referee changed his decision after being persuaded to see the event on the pitchside monitor.

Salah had given the Reds the lead earlier in the game when his low finish off the toe of James Milner hit the goal, before Naby Keita’s stunning volley doubled the advantage.

Before the interval, Griezmann’s beautiful close-range goal and then stunning turn and strike across Alisson restored parity.

Salah, on the other hand, has now become Liverpool’s record goalscorer in the Champions League, with 31 goals, one more than Steven Gerrard.

Jurgen Klopp’s team has now gone 21 games without losing in all competitions, and they continue to provide an offensive threat that opponents seldom cope with.

They have 30 goals in their past nine games and have scored at least three times in each of their seven away games this season.

After their most stunning victory to date, they currently lead Champions League Group B by a comfortable five points.

It did not impress Atletico manager Diego Simeone, who spent the game either energizing the home fans or berating the referees before walking down the tunnel at full time without shaking Klopp’s hand.

In Madrid, Liverpool creates even more pleasant recollections.

Liverpool and the Wanda Metropolitano have a connection.

They won Europe’s top club award for the sixth time in 2019 on this ground in the Spanish capital, but a 1-0 first-leg defeat to Atletico Madrid in the stadium the following season led to the end of their title defence.

They now have another great clash to add to their collection after this amazing game versus Atletico.

It’s a cliché to say a game has everything, but it’s hard to think of anything this action-packed and at times contentious contest didn’t have.

Salah has again shown why he is the greatest player in the world, proving his manager’s assertion that he is presently the best player in the world.

His goal owed a lot to Milner’s touch, but his tight control and ability in creating space for the shot were on par with a similar end result previously seen against Manchester City and Watford.

Griezmann was just as ruthless on the other end, with his second goal in particular demonstrating his clever movement and ability in front of goal as he left Virgil van Dijk in his wake after excellent work by Joao Felix.

The former Barcelona striker’s first goal was subjected to a lengthy VAR review, but the referees must have determined that Thomas Lemar did not block Joel Matip after being offside from Koke’s original effort.

Griezmann’s game was terminated by a controversial red card, but his boot was clearly high and out of control, even if it wasn’t deliberately harmful.

Alisson impressed on his return to the team with a series of excellent saves, although he nearly handed Atletico a 3-2 lead of their own before the interval with a clearing that hit Matip.

Finally, there are the fines, one of which was properly applied and the other which was not.

Hermoso can’t complain about the decision to penalize him for his stupid tackle on Jota, but the Liverpool striker’s minor but similar challenge on Gimenez in the area at the opposite end might have easily lost his team the game.

The decision by the referee to reverse his on-field judgment saved Jota, who had been caught on the wrong side of a free-kick, and helped Liverpool advance to the knockout rounds of Europe’s top club tournament.
